GunnaWannaBe

Learning Centre

The GunnaWannaBe Learning Centre is open on Saturday morning from 11.00am to 1.00pm and is conducted by Thelma James. Thelma is a qualified School Teacher and is a proud Bundjalung woman.

Maybe you have a University assignment or school project, that may need more “body building”, if you do than here for two hours you get to interact with Thelma and others to discuss local Aboriginal history in a group setting. You get to talk and listen to Thelma about local Aboriginal history and hear Thelma give an insight into other important issues affecting Aboriginal Australians.

On display is also a private collection of Aboriginal artifacts which Thelma uses in her discussion and talks about their uses and how they were implemented into Aboriginal society at the time.

Morning tea is provided and bookings are essential.

CULTURAL AWARENESS

Private Cultural Awareness group training (Mondays only) is conducted at GunnaWannaBe and includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch. These awareness groups are conducted in the privacy of GunnaWannaBe and is closed to the public on this day. For your own understanding you learn about Aboriginal culture, both Australian and local and see how it differs to local society.

What is Cultural Awareness?

To me, Cultural Awareness is about finding out and becoming aware of a culture that have differences within your Country or as in this case your Region. Aboriginal people have different values, beliefs and lifestyles. In order to understand Aboriginal culture you must understand Australian history and the effects it had on Aboriginal people.

Our Cultural Awareness group will focus on Australian and Bundjalung Country history.

Your day will include morning/afternoon tea and lunch with an Australian Aboriginal bush tucker theme.

We can also cater for special diets which include vegan, vegeterian and gluten free.
