1. Indigenous Australians

1) The term ‘Indigenous Australians means Australia’s first peoples. In an exhibition or course of talking it refers to both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

2) Aboriginal people are not one big homogeneous (the same formed of similar parts) group but are made up of many different peoples with their own languages. Before white people invaded Australia, Indigenous peoples spoke more than 700 different languages. Today, less than 250 languages are still in use.

How do you consider the term ‘Indigenous Australian’ what does it mean to you?

2. The Dreaming and Ancestral Beings

The children are taken on a journey on how the Dreaming and Ancestral Beings were formed.

“Long time ago before our Dreaming, the earth at our feet had no shape, it had no colour, there was no light and nothing walked across it.

There were no emu tracks and no kangaroo tracks. It was dust without water, no river flowed, the earth was empty…………..”

3. The Rainbow Serpent: the most powerful Ancestral Being

This mystical creature has two genders. As the Creator of the rainbow, he is the masculine sun. As an excavator of river beds and dweller in waterholes and lagoons, she is the feminine Earth-Spirit.

4. Important Dates in Aboriginal events

We look at the year, month and days that are significant to Aboriginal history.

5. Indigenous visual art techniques and where they originate

The journey begins with an easy to understand guide to Aboriginal art and why it is similar to other cultures.
