We originally set up the Cafe about 4 years ago because there was a real need for it in town. There was nowhere where you could sit and have a meal and nowhere for the youth or the elderly people of Bonalbo and surrounding areas to have a coffee or a sandwich while they were waiting for their appointments or visiting relatives.

We didn’t start out doing bush food even though we’d both grown up eating bush tucker. It was a trip to Sydney on a Bundjalung tour where we met 300 Aboriginal people from all over the country, who talked about cultural tourism and their own use of bushfoods, that got us started on the idea to set up something in our home town. Then a program called Bushfood Sensations came along and suddenly we had the opportunity to realise our dream.

Since then we’ve learnt a lot more about how good bush tucker is for your health and now we want to hand on the knowledge and skills to the youth in our region. So for us, it’s all about community and improving things for Aboriginal people. It’s also about sharing culture between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Our next step will be to employ some trainees to get the ball rolling.
